Michael R. Kasony-O'Malley, Professional Storyteller Michael R. Kasony-O'Malley is a full-time professional storyteller based in Columbus, Ohio. He is a member of the National Storytelling Association, the National Storytelling Network, the Ohio Order for the Preservation of Storytelling, Storytellers of Central Ohio, and the Greater Columbus Arts Council's Artists-in-Schools Program.

In his years on the planet, Michael has taught grades 1st through 4th in the Columbus Public Schools, worked full-time in a homeless shelter in Ireland, attended a peace conference in the (former) Soviet Union, received an M.S. degree in Elementary Education, worked for environmental groups in Massachusetts and Ohio, worked on an archeological dig in (the former) Czechoslovakia, visited Native American Indian reservations in over ten states, graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. degree, worked for a peace organization in Sweden, taught daycare, talked with insects, told tales to tens of thousands, and trained a dog to sneeze on command. (If you don't believe some of this stuff, just ask him.... he'd love to tell you THE STORIES!)

Michael has four areas of focus in his storytelling work reflecting four different parts of himself. Born in 1962 in Youngstown, Ohio, Michael is second generation Slovak-American on his mother's side and third generation Irish-American on his father's side. He has always had a strong sense of family and a keen interest in his ethnic heritage. As he says, "It was a thrill for me - several years ago - when I traveled to Europe and spent three months in Ireland and two months in the former Czechoslovakia." Drawing on folk literature, family stories, and his travels, Michael's repertoire includes a wide variety of Irish Tales, as well as Slovak & Slavic Stories. Reflecting on his childhood in Struthers, Ohio, (a suburb of Youngstown) Michael has wonderfully warm memories of the holiday season and he brings this warmth to life by sharing his treasure of Christmas Legends. His fourth focus area is Earth Mother Stories - Tales of Earth Stewardship & Stories of Human Fellowship. "I believe that we are all called to both care for our Earth and care for each other," says Michael. Drawing from folk tales, original stories, literary tales, and his own experiences, Michael offers stories "to 'spire hope in ourselves and love of Earth Mother." Remembering what an elder once told him, Michael says, "Whenever I am telling a story, my goal is to always entertain the audience and to never just entertain the audience."

Every story is a seed
Some will germinate and grow
A spire that respires and inspires ... what we sow

Michael sharing Irish Tales
Michael tailors his storytelling performances to the age ranges of his audiences and, within each of his four focus areas, he offers programs especially for children, for teens & young adults, for families, and for adult audiences. In addition, Michael offers a number of storytelling workshops including classroom workshops for students (K - 12), professional development workshops for teachers, and storytelling workshops for parents, grandparents, fellow storytellers, and other adults interested in the storytelling craft. Michael also offers special one-week and two-week storytelling residencies for schools.
Michael and his wife Ali live in Columbus, Ohio with their three children, Jazmin, Meshach, and EdithAnna, and their two dogs, Oreo & Snickers. A full-time professional storyteller since 1995, Michael has many reasons for his unusual job, ranging from "motivating youngsters to read and expand their imaginations" to "inspiring senior citizens and elders to share their stories and their stored wisdom." As Michael explains, "Stories teach. Stories inspire. Stories entertain. Stories touch our hearts and our souls. You can not truly know someone if you do not know their stories. We learn through story. And stories take us to places unmapped and 'unmappable.' Stories connect us to the past and they lead us to the future."
Michael's mission is to guide us on a journey - to connect us & reflect us, to enchant us & inspire us, to echo our laughing joys & illuminate our deep-heart wisdom - through the magical, mystical medium of the tale well told. Michael's art is to bring the stories to life. Join Michael on the journey. Be entertained. Be inspired. And be enchanted.
